How a Strategic Career Move Took an M&A Specialist from VP to Managing Director in Just 3 Years
Brief
A talented M&A Director we’d known since the start of their career came to us for guidance. They were thriving in their current role, but despite strong performance and clear leadership potential, they were blocked from originating deals by a senior MD ahead of them. They wanted a platform that would recognise their capabilities and give them space to build their own client portfolio in a specialised sector.
Approach
We took the time to really understand their long-term goals, pinpoint their frustrations, and map out where their skill set could have the greatest impact. We shared their profile speculatively with a client who had recently restructured and was looking for rising talent with the potential to grow into a future MD.
We framed the initial meeting as a low-risk conversation — if not a fit for now, then one to revisit later. The chemistry was immediate. The client was energised by the candidate’s sharp thinking, technical depth, and leadership style. Just a few weeks later, they had an offer — and accepted!
The role focused on slightly smaller deals, where the candidate’s mentoring instincts could shine. We supported them through the offer process, helped navigate the transition, and stayed close throughout onboarding.
Results
Three years on, they’ve gone from VP to Managing Director. Their ascent has been powered by performance — but it all started with a strategic move that aligned their ambition, capabilities, and environment.
